In a city where handicrafts reign supreme, it is no surprise to find markets and shopping opportunities in abundance. Often referred as the ‘Handicraft Highway’, Sankamphaeng Road is where you will find a superb variety of handicrafts, including lacquer ware, pottery, colourful hand-painted umbrellas made of Bamboo or Sa paper, silver, gem, silk and antiques. You’ll also be able to see the craftsmen at work and marvel at century-old production techniques like umbrella making, crafted by hand with the aid of some basic rural tools.
One of the city’s main night-time attractions, the bustling Chiang Mai Night Bazaar offers an undisputable variety of handicraft and exotic souvenirs. Right at the heart of the old walled city, the Sunday afternoon Walking Street features a market that showcases a variety of artisan crafts and arts. Open every Sunday from 4.00pm onwards, the market also features Thai style street performances.
More contemporary additions to Chiang Mai shopping scenes include Central Festival shopping centre and Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport department store, respectively less than 10 minutes away by road and 20 minutes away.
About 15 minutes from the resort by road, Nimmahemin Street is a popular place for locals and visitors alike. Strolling down the main street and small alleys will lead you passed locally designed shops and cosy local cafés along the street. Now regarded as the coffee capital of Thailand, Chiang Mai has a recent yet strong coffee culture, apparent in the preponderance of coffee shops and work space cafés in the old city and around Nimmahemin Street. Popular coffee shops operated by independent growers and roasters include the like of Ristr8to, Ponganges, Akha Ama, and Nine-One Coffee.
In addition to fragrant coffees and northern Thai specialities, foodies who desire to go local in Chiang Mai will be searching for the ultimate Khao Soi. Buddhism plays an important role in Chiang Mai’s past and current history, and this is evident in the number of wats (temples) standing in the Old City, surrounded by old gates. The impressive Wat Phra Singh, one of Chiang Mai’s most-visited temples and finest examples of classic Lanna style architecture, dates back to the 14th century and houses a venerated Buddha image. Wat Chedi Luang is known for playing host to Chiang Mai’s largest Buddhist pagoda while Wat Chiang Man is the city’s oldest temple, established by the founder of the city in the late years of the 13th century. This quaint temple contains two famous Buddhas. Other interesting temples include Wat Phan Tao and Wat Bupparam which has a charming little teak bòt and decorated in Lanna style.
